The diary
A couple of years ago, I was at an estate sale flipping through some old books on a shelf and found a red leather bound diary. This was a typical diary given out by banks. I have always been fascinated by history – especially women’s histories (of course) so I began to read. It was a year in the life of a young lady living in Akron, Ohio in the 20’s. The diary is full of daily entries, references to local places (Cleveland & Akron), newspaper clippings and drawings.
One interesting bit is that Helen often mentions her sister Rhea. About a year after I found the diary, I found a yearbook for North High School in Akron (1930) and lo and behold – sister Rhea Gaylord’s picture is in it!
Helen died in August of 1986 http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp
I thought I’d share it with you all so I’ll begin posting in case anyone else finds this as fascinating as I do. I’ll scan any of the drawings as they come up and post them along. Please let me know if you find this boring and I’ll stop!
